WILL THE STATE BECOME THE CHURCH?

"In the United States, a long string of court cases and, by now a largely secular political culture, have pushed religion out of the public arena. Soon the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case to decide whether the Ten Commandments - the very basis of all Western law - legally can be displayed in public buildings. If the court rules against the Commandments, then it will, in effect, declare that its own rulings are superior - the state becomes the church."

I for one will be perfectly glad for the 10 commandments to be out of areas of civil government. For me this is not a liberal/conservative argument, nor a separation of church and state issue.

This is simply an opportunity for THE CHURCH to reclaim as peculiar and unique something that was coopted by secular society. The government can post 10 commandments in their courtrooms or city halls, but the reality is, unless you are rooted within a tradition (for us it is the Christian tradition informed by the Jewish tradition)that can inform meaning to objects and manuscripts- such as the 10 commandments, then you just have another nice document.

Sorry for the rambling thoughts.
